For Rebeca Gálvez, life has never followed a straight line. A woman of science, heart, and vision, her path has taken her from sudden family loss to global entrepreneurship. Today, as co-founder and CEO of Patagonia Biotecnología S.A., she is helping reshape the future of sustainable agriculture—while staying deeply rooted in her values and the country she now calls home.

A proud alumna of Nido de Águilas, class of 1983, Rebeca’s story is one of resilience, reinvention, and the drive to give back—not only to her eight children, but to Chile and the planet.

A Calling Sparked by Sudden Change

Born with Guatemalan and American roots, Rebeca grew up immersed in the values of hard work and family. But at just 23 years old, life shifted dramatically when her father passed away unexpectedly. With courage beyond her years, she stepped into a leadership role in the family business—an early test of strength that would go on to define her entrepreneurial spirit.

Those early years weren’t easy. But in navigating the demands of business and personal responsibility, Rebeca discovered her capacity for decisive action, thoughtful leadership, and strategic vision. Qualities that, years later, would serve her well as she moved into a much larger arena.

From Business Success to Scientific Purpose

Rebeca’s path included a variety of business ventures, each bringing new experiences and challenges. Yet there remained a deeper calling—a desire to combine purpose with impact. She wasn’t content just building businesses. She wanted to build a better world.

That opportunity arrived in 2013, when she co-founded Patagonia Biotecnología S.A. (“PatBio”), a company that perfectly blended her passion for science, environmental conservation, and entrepreneurship. It was more than just a company—it was a mission.

PatBio became the vehicle through which Rebeca could give back to Chile, a country that had given her so much. It also became the foundation for a legacy she hoped to leave her children—proof that business and sustainability could not only coexist, but thrive together.

Harnessing Nature’s Wisdom – The Birth of PatBio

The idea behind PatBio is both simple and powerful: use the abundant seaweed found in the nutrient-rich waters of the Humboldt Current along Chile’s coast to create bio-stimulants for agriculture. These naturally derived solutions help farmers improve yields, boost crop quality, and reduce dependency on synthetic chemicals.

Their flagship product, Fertum®, reflects the heart of this mission. A 100% natural, seaweed-based biostimulant, Fertum® is designed to increase plant resilience, enhance root development, and improve fruit size and quality—offering a significant contribution to sustainable agriculture in Chile and around the world.

At a time when climate change and environmental pressures threaten food systems, Rebeca and her team are building real solutions. Through science and innovation, they’re helping farmers not only grow more—but grow better.

Women in Leadership – Rebeca’s Recognition and Reach

In a traditionally male-dominated sector, Rebeca has broken through barriers and led with clarity and compassion. Her work hasn’t gone unnoticed.

In 2018, she was honored as one of the 100 Women Leaders in Chile, a recognition of her influence, innovation, and commitment to sustainability. She also became an ENDEAVOR entrepreneur in 2015, joining a global network of high-impact leaders working to solve the world’s toughest challenges through business.

In 2017, she was selected as a finalist in the Fish 2.0 competition, a global platform connecting sustainable seafood innovators with investors and industry leaders. Rebeca’s work at PatBio captured international attention—proof that Chilean biotechnology could compete on the world stage.

Giving Back to Chile and the Next Generation

For Rebeca, this journey isn’t just about business—it’s deeply personal. As a mother of eight, she often speaks of her desire to leave behind more than a successful company. She hopes to leave behind a legacy of impact—a sense of purpose, possibility, and environmental responsibility that her children, and generations to come, can build upon.

Her deep commitment to Chile shines through everything she does. Though her heritage spans borders, her heart is firmly planted in Chilean soil. Through her work, she honors the country’s natural richness and contributes to its sustainable future.

Her leadership style—compassionate, collaborative, and forward-thinking—echoes the values she carried from her time at Nido de Águilas, where global citizenship, curiosity, and service are at the core of the school’s ethos.

Planting Seeds for the Future

Rebeca Gálvez is many things: a visionary, a trailblazer, a scientist, a mother, and a Nido de Águilas alumna. Her story reminds us that true leadership grows from challenge and that the most meaningful success often stems from giving back.

Through Patagonia Biotecnología, she’s not only supporting farmers and preserving ecosystems—she’s redefining what it means to lead with both head and heart. And in doing so, she’s helping to plant the seeds of a more sustainable, resilient future.
